Always Wanted to Surf the Summer Waves of Moonstone Beach and Trinidad, California?
Riding waves on the North Coast

When someone mentions the word surfing, usually another person follows with"I've’ always wanted to try that." Well, grab that someone and drive them up to Moonstone Beach.
The Moonstone Beach "Endless Summer" Surfcamp located in Trinidad, CA is in its second decade of providing North Coast and out-of-area first timers with an opportunity to not only learn and enjoy surfing, but every other activity that comes with being oceanside. And if there’s one guy for the job of head instructor, it’s
Jeffrey Steinkamp aka "Steiny". The credentialed school teacher and experienced California State Lifeguard has ventured around the world surfing at hot spots and low-key hideaways. And after being embraced by numerous surfing cultures, the 25-year Trinidad resident decided to spread the surf "stoke"right here in Humboldt County. And what better place to start your passion, than home. "Moonstone is perfect for a surf camp," Steinkamp said. "It has shallow water, gentle waves and lots of sand."
But the 3-day camp doesn’t just cover the "face of the wave," it’s an in-depth education session that teaches lifeguard water safety, surf etiquette, beach and ocean awareness, and environmental impact. The camp is proud to be a consistent fundraiser for the Surfrider Foundation, which is a non-profit environmental chapter of the nation-wide Surfrider Foundation. "The tuition supports the Surfrider Foundation and they were a motivating force in changing the local pulp mill’s chlorine emissions," Steinkamp said. The camp also provides a hands-on approach to
various other ocean sports, such as body surfing, body boarding, skim boarding and Jr Lifeguard water safety and challenges.
Another feature to the surf school is just pure fun. Along with days of surfing, the camp also includes junior lifesaving activities, hilarious team & endurance games, and an end of the week Luau."We have a good time," second-year camper Logan Malcomson said. "(Steinkamp) is a good teacher. He makes everything fun. We play a lot of games."
One of Steinkamp’s favorite aspects to the school is its ability to give one-time students the opportunity to teach some day. Eighteen-year-old Matt Wright has progressed from beginner to apprentice to instructor within four years of camp experience. The eight instructors go through the lifeguard/instructor training before summer and thus spend each day assisting campers, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., with a variety of ocean skill-building activities. And Steinkamp always makes sure there are plenty of instructors to go around for the eight-year-old and up enthusiasts. "We always make sure there is at least a 6 -to-1 student-instructor ratio," the 30-year surfer said. "That’s always important." In the early years, six-to-eight kids were signing up for the camp, but after some years passed and school maturation, Steinkamp has watched his passion blossom. Moonstone’s numbers of enrollment have nearly quadrupled, incorporating all ages and all skill levels. "We have various skill levels, but it’s mainly beginners,"Steinkamp said. "This is just a great opportunity to get in tune with the ocean."
The camp’s second session just came to a conclusion on Friday with 25 kids registered. Two more sessions are still available this summer. Sessions will take place every other week or 5 sessions usually starting the last weeks in June
Summer 2022
Aloha from Jeffrey and the MBSC Family~~ We are excited to be riding our 22 st year of waves with Moonstone Beach Surfcampers. I started this surfcamp after taking a 1 year “endless summer” trip with my family around the South Pacific (Australia, Indonesia, Sumatra, New Zealand and some Pacific islands). Lots of exploration, cultural education and summer sun along with surfing with a variety of native peoples, young and old. Weather it was scoring perfect peelers in Sumatra, closing out Bondi beach break in Oz or living with a village on a small Fijian Island and riding reef pass lefts 2 miles offshore, still some of my best times were riding small waves with the local kids and my family.
Inspired, rejuvenated, continuing to be in love with the ocean and sharing the good vibe with kids along the way, Moonstone Beach Surfcamp became the obvious next step when settling back into Humboldt in 2001 after my initial landing here from San Clemente, Ca in the late 80s to go to HSU. My roots in southern Cal were a waterman lifestyle of fishing with my dad, doing summer junior lifeguard programs in my elementary years, surfing and free diving with my friends, and then ultimately becoming a humble guardian of the beach, a California State Lifeguard.
35 years later, I am still passionate about wave riding and this recent 2021/2022 winter surf seasons were some of my favorite as I felt a renewed energy to tube ride and carve up waves on my short board. I also had a very humbling experience surfing at the north jetty on a 14ft at 18 second interval February swell- foggy conditions, big waves and powerful currents. These type of challenging conditions heighten my awareness and I bring this experience to camp, absolutely emphasizing safety as our #1 priority when working with your kids.
What I bring to MBSC is lots of love and respect for the ocean. What the male & female instructors and I teach is beach and ocean safety, wave riding in all fashions (including my favorite, body surfing), environmental education-and all with the fun, Aloha spirit intended by our Polynesian wave-riding ancestors. The MBSC instructors, many of whom grew up attending camp, have become watermen and waterwomen themselves, completed our Lifeguard/Instructor training, and are the reasons MBSC is so safe and fun.
The MBSC mission statement is: help kids foster a comfort in and enjoyment of the ocean-and ultimately they love it and will be encouraged to protect it during their lifetime (see our 'The Bigger Picture' tab)
With appreciation and gratitude for these opportunities with your children, Mahalo, Jeffrey Steinkamp
